This morning Google announced Buzz as kind of a country cousin of Google Wave integrated with Gmail.

The idea is to bring social networking into Gmail and even the rest of the Google apps.
Top list of features:

  • Automatically follow the people you email and chat with the most in Gmail.
  • Publish your ideas to the world or just to your closest friends.
  • Comments get sent right to your inbox so it’s easy to keep the conversation going.
  • See thumbnails with each post, and browse full-screen photos from popular sites.
  • Import your stuff from Twitter, Picasa, Flickr, and Google Reader.
  • New posts and comments pop in as they happen. No refresh required.
  • Buzz recommends interesting posts and weeds out ones you’re likely to skip.
  • New Buzz overlay in Google Maps for location based posts.
From what I can see, Buzz looks a lot like Facebook’s newsfeed.
There is also a mobile version that I was able to try on my iPhone that allows me to geotag my posts, if I want.  Just point your phones browser to buzz.google.com.
Buzz began rolling out to Gmail accounts this morning and will continue over the next few days.  I was able to check out the mobile version right away, but I am waiting for the Gmail integrated version to show up.

A friend just turned me on to reQall. It is an interesting web based reminder system, that is supposed to support location based reminders. Somewhat like an uber electronic GTD(Getting Things Done) system, it supports adding items by voice, email, IM and text messaging. ReQall will also send reminders to email, IM, and SMS.

One of the things that caught my attention is that IM reminders are interactive. ReQall will ask you if a certain task is done, and you can reply with a yes or no. A “no” will re-que for another reminder.

There is also an iPhone app that makes adding items by just speaking it very easy. ReQall has what appears to be an excellent speech recognition system that rarely misses.

The app is not without some issues though. One of the features of the Pro version is to be able to assign items to map locations, and reQall is supposed to remind you of items when you are close to the location using the GPS in the iPhone. The problem is that I can not seem to set locations to a map like they say I should be able to.

There are many other features, like integration with Evernote, Google Calendar, iCal

Google Wave has been in the back of my mind since I first heard about it. What would email be like if it were invented today? What a great question! Email has been a major part of my professional life for a bit less then 15 years.

Now I see a glimmer of change, perhaps even for the better. But I must wait for my invite, or some kind person that perhaps wants to bless me with one of theirs.

What does the future of electronic communication hold for us? Will Wave be a key part of it? I really don’t want to wait to find out.
